Packaging and parcel tape

Packaging and parcel tape

Packaging tapes are activated by pressure. The better you press it down the better it sticks. It is important to use a proper dispenser which applies the tape with a roller to press it down.

"Curing time" the is the time the tape takes reaches its maximum adhesion. In warm weather this maybe an hour or two. Its better to keep packages out of direct sunlight during this period.

Cold working
  • Tapes do not work well when its really cold.
  • It is advisable to keep the rolls in a warm place.
How do I apply tape to heavy boxes?
  • Bring down the flaps of the box.
  • Start with a "holding strap" of tape across the flaps to hold them in position.
  • Run a length of tape along the length of these so the join is under the middle of the tape.
  • The tape should run 50 to 75mm over the edge onto both ends of the box.
  • The tape is pressed firmly down onto the box to ensure good adhesion.
  • For heavy and export boxes it is advisable to add a further strip of tape across the ends of the flaps.
Different types of packing tape
  • Clear or brown packaging tape is used for standard packing.
  • Polypropylene tape is clear plastic tape that is strong, durable, and is very resistant to breaking. Polypropylene tape cannot be torn by hand and requires scissors, knives, or a dispenser to use.
  • Cross weave filament tape is good for keeping items secure and reducing the risk of accidental opening by unauthorized parties. The filaments make it difficult to open the package by hand, making shipments more secure.
  • Masking tape is not very strong and removes cleanly.
  • Printed fragile tape is designed to let couriers and handlers know that the consignment is fragile. Fragile tape tape is normally white with the word “fragile” printed in red bold letters.
  • PVC tape provides a high quality taping with high performance and strong support for all types of shipping needs.
  • Kraft paper tape is designed to blend well with boxes while providing a high adhesive for many different applications. Kraft paper tape is brown in colour and is easily torn by hand.
Choosing packaging tape
  • Custom printed tape can be printed with your logo and message to build brand awareness and give information or instructions. Custom tape can be printed on a white background tape or a coloured background.
  • Vinyl tape is very strong, tear resistant and waterproof. Vinyl tape offers superior performance for sealing cardboard boxes and other packaging. Vinyl tape comes in 50mm and 75mm widths and is resistant to extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Coloured tape is ideal for sealing your cardboard boxes and colour coding them all in one go. Coloured tape saves time and money not having to put separate labels on the boxes.
  • Cloth tape is waterproof with a strong and reliable performance. Due to its industrial grade it is ideal for duct work, general repair, reinforcement and export packaging. Cloth tape is widely available in black or silver at 50mm width.
  • Double sided tape is made from polypropylene with adhesive on both sides of the tape and a silicon release paper. With widths of 25mm or 50mm the tape can hold very heavy weights.
  • Masking tape is made of creped paper and is largely used in the automotive body building and repair trade, building and construction and many other industries. Masking tape is easy to tear and removes cleanly from the surface of the product it is used on.
  • Filament tape is used for packing heavy consignments. Filament tape is cross woven with glass filaments to provide high tensile strength. Filament tape is suitable for heavyweight strapping applications, export packing and bundling.
  • Tamper evident tape gives you some protection from people tampering with your packages. The polypropylene security tape is designed to reduce pilferage and unauthorized opening of packages.
  • Gummed paper tape provides a secure, tamper evident seal. Gummed paper tape forms a complete fibre bond with the sealed carton and is unaffected by extreme temperatures of -50 to 100 centigrade. Gummed paper tape is ideal for export and deep freeze.
  • Hazard warning tape can guard your workforce against accidents. Hazard warning tape is suitable for use both indoors and out. Red and white hazard warning tape is used for fire hazards, extinguisher locations etc. Green and white hazard warning tape is used for safety equipment and emergency exits etc and black and yellow tape for hazardous areas and obstacles. Barrier hazard hazard warning tape is used extensively by local authorities, road maintenance contractors and police etc. for restricting access to excavations, accident sites or work areas temporarily out of bounds.
  • Floor marking tape is made of strong plasticised PVC and is used for lane identification and floor marking in sports halls etc.
